talking to other people about dragon age genuinely isn’t fun anymore because the moment I say anything non-critical about the templar order or the chantry people immediately jump down my fucking throat because somehow being pro-templar makes me a bad person :)))
tbh I really don’t get why the pro-templar characters in teh series don’t emphasise how there are a ton of templars who are promised to the order at a young age and basically forced into being templars?
you’d think, since the writing really tries to drum up sympathy for them, that they’d be all over that argument like a shot - “mages don’t choose it, but a lot of templars can’t either!”. The only one who uses that argument is Alistair, and that’s in explaining why he was desperate to leave (combined with him not agreeing 100% with their methods).
maybe it’s because it sounds less morally superior that way? highlighting the lack of choice makes it sound less like “I joined the order because it’s a noble cause and I want to help people!” and more like “I’m here because I have to be and I can’t ever leave.”
Bc the DA writers are only a little less promage than the fandom
